| Abstract | Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory skin disease associated with Propionibacterium acnes infection and impaired skin barrier function. Basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L.) contain alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and steroids with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This study is aimed to formulate basil leaf ethanol extract into a serum gel, evaluate its physical quality, determine its antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and identify the most effective concentration as a barrier-supporting agent. This experimental study used basil leaf ethanol extract serum gel formulations at concentrations of 15% (F1), 20% (F2) and 25% (F3). The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity and skin irritation. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method, while barrier-supporting activity was evaluated in volunteers using a skin analyzer and moisture checker. The results showed that all formulations met the required physical quality parameters and caused no skin irritation. All formulations exhibited antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, with the F3 formulation (25%) producing the largest inhibition zone, measuring 19.33 mm. Therefore, the 25% basil leaf ethanol extract serum gel formulation was the most effective concentration as an antibacterial agent against Propionibacterium acnes as well as a barrier-supporting agent Keywords: Serum Gel, Basil leaves, Propionibacterium acnes, Antibacterial, Skin Barrier. | 1 |
