| Abstract | Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. leaves were known to contain flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, and alkaloids with potential natural antioxidant activity. The utilization of natural ingredients in cosmetic formulations was considered a safer alternative to synthetic ingredients that may cause adverse effects on the skin. Facial toner is one of the most widely used cosmetic products; therefore, research was conducted to develop a facial toner containing Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. leaf extract that meets quality requirements and possesses antioxidant activity. This study is aimed to formulate and evaluate a facial toner containing ethanolic Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. leaf extract and to determined its antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. The study was conducted experimentally through extraction by maceration, formulation of facial toners containing 1%, 3%, and 5% extract, physical quality evaluation including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, stability, skin irritation, and moisturizing tests, as well as antioxidant activity determination based on the IC₅₀ value using the DPPH method. The results showed that all formulations meet the physical quality requirements, have skin-compatible pH, are homogeneous and stable, do not cause skin irritation, and improve skin moisture. The IC₅₀ values of Formula I, Formula II, and Formula III are 152 ppm, 127.5 ppm, and 98.31 ppm, respectively, indicating weak, moderate, and strong antioxidant activities. Formula I is the best formulation, although its antioxidant activity is still lower than that of the commercial toner (IC₅₀ = 66.06 ppm) and vitamin C (IC₅₀ = 5.21 ppm). Therefore, ethanolic Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. leaf extract has the potential to be used as a natural active ingredient in facial toner formulations that meet quality requirements and possess antioxidant activity. | 1 |
