| Abstract | Analysis of Hydroquinone Content in Facial Brightening Serums Available on the Market in Deli Tua Using Thin Layer Chromatography and UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. Thesis, Bachelor of Pharmacy Study Program, Faculty of Pharmacy, Deli Husada Health Institute, Deli Tua. Supervised by Bunga Mari Sembiring, S.Si., M.K.M. Facial brightening serum is a cosmetic product for brightening skin and reducing hyperpigmentation. The high demand for this product has the potential to encourage hydroquinone abuse. Hydroquinone is a potent drug that is prohibited for use as a skin lightening ingredient in cosmetic products because it can cause skin irritation, redness, and even cancer. This study aims to identify and determine the levels of hydroquinone in facial brightening serum preparations circulating in the Deli Tua Market using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and UV-Vis Spectrophotometry methods, and to evaluate the validity of the analytical methods used. This study is a descriptive experimental study involving three facial brightening serum samples selected using a purposive sampling technique. Qualitative identification was carried out using the TLC method, while the determination of levels was carried out using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry at a maximum wavelength of 293 nm. The results showed that all samples were positive for containing hydroquinone based on the conformity of the Rf value with the reference standard. The levels of hydroquinone in samples A, B, and C were 0.14498%, 0.04295%, and 0.04344%, respectively. The analytical method used has met the validation requirements, including linearity, accuracy, precision, Limit of Detection (LOD), and Limit of Quantification (LOQ) tests. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that all analyzed facial brightening serum samples contained hydroquinone, thus failing to comply with the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM RI) regulations prohibiting the use of hydroquinone in cosmetic products. Based on these results, it is recommended that further research use more sensitive analytical methods, such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), to obtain more accurate results and analyze a larger number of cosmetic samples circulating in the community.
