| Abstract | Home-based sewing businesses are an informal sector with a high potential risk of occupational accidents, yet they receive the least attention from occupational safety systems. Daily use of needles and sewing machines poses physical and mechanical hazards arising from human, machine, and environmental factors. This study aimed to describe the risk of occupational accidents in the use of needles and sewing machines in home-based sewing businesses in Deli Tua Timur Village in 2026 using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) method. This study used a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken by total sampling of 37 workers from 17 home-based sewing businesses. Data were collected using an HIRARC observation checklist and a risk matrix assessment sheet (Likelihood x Severity). then analyzed descriptively. The results showed unsafe acts related to human factors, such as lack of occupational safety and health (OSH) training and not wearing footwear; unsafe conditions related to machine factors, such as unguarded pulleys and needles; and workplace environments that did not meet safety standards, such as the absence of first-aid kits. 16 hazard was identified, 4 were categorized as extreme, 5 as high, 4 as moderate, and 2 as low, most of required priority controls. Control recommendations were developed based on the Hierarchy of Control, prioritizing engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment. Business owners are advised to immediately implement controls for high- and extreme-risk hazards, while village governments and the Occupational Safety and Health Center (Balai K3) are advised to provide OSH guidance for informal sector workers. | 1 |
