| Abstract | Pesticide sprayers in oil palm plantations are at risk of chemical exposure through the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, and indirect oral routes. Exposure may occur at various stages of work and may affect workers’ occupational safety and health (OSH). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between pesticide exposure risk and occupational safety and health among pesticide sprayers using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control (HIRADC) method at the PT Tolan Tiga Indonesia oil palm plantation in 2025. This study employed a quantitative method with an analytical observational design and a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all 31 pesticide sprayers at PT Tolan Tiga Indonesia. A total sampling technique was applied; therefore, the entire population was included as the study sample. Data were collected through field observations using HIRADC forms and an OSH questionnaire. HIRADC was used to identify hazards and assess risk levels based on likelihood and severity, while workers’ OSH conditions were assessed based on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work practices, and health complaints. The relationship between variables was analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test because the Shapiro–Wilk normality test indicated that the data were not normally distributed. The results identified six main stages of work: preparation of equipment and PPE, pesticide mixing, filling the spray tank, field spraying, equipment cleaning, and worker decontamination. A total of 31 hazards were identified, of which 15 hazards (48.4%) were categorized as moderate risk and 16 hazards (51.6%) as high risk. The highest number of hazards was found during the field spraying stage. Based on the assessment of 31 respondents, 15 respondents (48.4%) were classified as having moderate pesticide exposure risk and 16 respondents (51.6%) as having high exposure risk. Workers’ OSH conditions were categorized as good in 10 respondents (32.3%), fair in 11 respondents (35.5%), and poor in 10 respondents (32.3%). The Spearman Rank correlation test showed a significant relationship between pesticide exposure risk and occupational safety and health among pesticide sprayers (r_s = 0.482; p = 0.006), with a moderate strength of correlation. The higher the pesticide exposure risk category, the greater the tendency for workers to have poorer occupational safety and health conditions. It was concluded that pesticide exposure risk was significantly associated with the occupational safety and health conditions of pesticide sprayers at PT Tolan Tiga Indonesia. The company should strengthen risk control measures based on the hierarchy of controls, particularly by providing a designated pesticide mixing area, preventing spills and equipment leakage, conducting scheduled inspections of spraying equipment, ensuring the use of appropriate PPE, improving training and supervision, and providing adequate decontamination facilities. | id |
