| Abstract | Inflammation is a protective response to tissue injury characterized by swelling, pain, redness, and heat. Synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs may cause adverse effects, encouraging the exploration of safer natural products. The bark of Cotylelobium melanoxylon contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids with potential anti-inflammatory properties. This experimental study evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanol extract against carrageenan-induced paw edema in male Wistar rats using seven treatment groups. The extract fulfilled simplicia quality requirements and contained major secondary metabolites. It significantly reduced paw edema compared with the negative control, with the 800 mg/kg body weight dose showing the greatest activity, comparable to diclofenac sodium (p<0.05). These findings indicate that the ethanol extract of C. melanoxylon bark has promising potential as a natural anti- inflammatory agent.
