| Abstract | Dental caries is a disease affecting the hard tissues of the tooth: enamel, dentin, and cementum. The disease is characterized by the demineralization of inorganic components and the destruction of organic tooth substances. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. The general objective was to analyze the effect of topical fluoride application on dental caries in children at the Dabun Gelang Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Gayo Lues Regency, in 2026. The sample consisted of 40 respondents selected via consecutive sampling. Data were obtained through def-t and DMF-T measurements and observation sheets recorded before (pretest) and after (posttest) the topical fluoride application. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Wilcoxon test (p-value < 0.05). Regarding dental caries levels before topical fluoride application, the most dominant category was "moderate" (22 children; 55.0%), while the "high" category represented the minority (18 children; 45.0%). Following the application, the most dominant category shifted to "low" (28 children; 70.0%), with the "high" category representing a small minority (2 children; 5.0%). The mean score was 4.25 before the application and 2.28 after the application. The study concludes that there is an effect of topical fluoride application on dental caries in children at the Dabun Gelang Community Health Center, Gayo Lues Regency, in 2026. | 1 |
