| Abstract | Diarrhea is an infectious gastrointestinal disease with a high mortality rate and is generally caused by pathogenic bacterial infections, particularly Escherichia coli. The long-term use of synthetic antidiarrheal drugs may cause undesirable side effects, highlighting the need for alternative treatments derived from medicinal plants. Indonesian bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) and betel nuts (Areca catechu L.) are rich in secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids, which possess antibacterial and antidiarrheal properties. This study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination of ethanolic extracts of Indonesian bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) and betel nuts (Areca catechu L.) and to determine the most effective combination ratio as an antidiarrheal agent in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with Escherichia coli. This experimental study involved 25 male white rats divided into five groups a negative control group, a positive control group, and three treatment groups receiving combinations of the extracts at ratios of 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2. All treatments were administered orally after the rats had been fasted for 8 hours. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by a Post Hoc test. The results showed a statistically significant difference among the treatment groups (p < 0.05). The combination of ethanolic extracts of Indonesian bay leaves and betel nuts at a ratio of 1:1 produced the most optimal antidiarrheal effect.
