| Abstract | Free radicals generated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation can induce oxidative stress, leading to skin damage. One approach to prevent such damage is the use of cosmetic preparations containing antioxidants. Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) flowers are known to contain secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and steroids, which possess antioxidant properties. This study is aimed to formulate a face mist containing ethanolic extract of Etlingera elatior flowers, evaluate its physical quality and determine its antioxidant activity using the 2,2-Diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. This experimental study consisted of four formulations: F0 (base), F1 (5%), F2 (10%) and F3 (15%). Physical quality evaluation included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spray pattern, drying time, viscosity and stability tests. Antioxidant activity was determined based on the IC₅₀ value using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer and statistically analyzed using One-Way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that all formulations containing the extract met the required physical quality parameters, whereas the base formulation (F0) did not satisfy all evaluation criteria. The IC₅₀ value of vitamin C as the positive control was 15.08 ppm, while the IC₅₀ values of F0, F1, F2 and F3 were 307.41 ppm, 76.58 ppm, 71.64 ppm and 53.73 ppm, respectively. One-Way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference in antioxidant activity among the formulations (p < 0.05). Formula F3 exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and was classified as a very strong antioxidant. In conclusion, the ethanolic extract of Etlingera elatior flowers was successfully formulated into a face mist that fulfilled the required physical quality standards and demonstrated very strong antioxidant activity, particularly at the 15% extract concentration. | 1 |
