| Abstract | Rhizophora mucronata L. leaves are one of the mangrove plants that contain secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial activity. This study is aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of Rhizophora mucronata leaves against Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli, determine the most effective extract concentration and identify the secondary metabolites using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). This experimental study employed the agar well diffusion method using extract concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%, with chloramphenicol as the positive control and DMSO as the negative control. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA. The results showed that the methanolic extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. All extract concentrations exhibited antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli, with the 75% concentration producing the largest inhibition zones of 16.89 mm and 13,95 mm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among the treatment groups (p<0.05). It can be concluded that the methanolic extract of Rhizophora mucronata leaves possesses antibacterial activity, and the 75% concentration was the most effective against both bacteria. | 1 |
