| Abstract | Bioactive Antibacterial Compound Profile of Ethanolic Extract of Bakau Kurap Leaves (Rhizophora mucronata L.) Against Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Using Thin-Layer Chromatography. Undergraduate thesis, bachelor of pharmacy program, faculty pharmacy, institute kesehatan deli husada deli tua. Supervised: Firdaus Fahdi M.Pd. Acne and bacterial infections remain major dermatological problems, primarily driven by Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Synthetic treatments often cause adverse side effects, prompting the search for natural alternatives. Bakau Kurap leaves (Rhizophora mucronata L.) are known to contain diverse bioactive compounds that exhibit potent medicinal properties, yet their specific antibacterial efficacy against these pathogens requires further investigation. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of Bakau Kurap leaves (Rhizophora mucronata L.) against Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and to identify its secondary metabolites using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The plant material was extracted via maceration using 70% ethanol as the solvent. Phytochemical compounds were identified based on Rf values and color reactions after spraying with specific detecting reagents on TLC plates. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the disc diffusion method with extract concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 50%. Results The results showed that the ethanolic extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The extract exhibited antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as indicated by the formation of inhibition zones at all tested concentrations. The 50% concentration showed the highest antibacterial activity compared with the 10% and 30% concentrations. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of Bakau Kurap leaves (Rhizophora mucronata L.) has potential as a natural antibacterial agent against Propionibacterium acnes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Future studies should focus on isolating the specific active compounds responsible for the antibacterial activity and developing them into stable topical pharmaceutical formulations for clinical application.
