| Abstract | Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) is known to contain secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial properties; however, its use in clay mask formulations with varying concentrations of bentonite and kaolin has not been extensively explored. Variations in these two ingredients are suspected to influence the physical characteristics of the formulation and its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This study is aimed to optimize the formulation of an ethanol extract of areca nut clay mask with varying concentrations of bentonite and kaolin and to evaluate its physical quality and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This study was experimental study. Areca nut seed extract was obtained via maceration using 96% ethanol, then formulated into three clay mask formulations with varying concentrations of kaolin and bentonite: Formulation 0 and 1 (2:2), Formulation 2 (2.5:1.5) and Formulation 3 (3:1). The preparations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, drying time, stability (cycling test), swelling and hedonic testing. Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was tested by using the disk diffusion method. The results of the study showed that all formulations met the physical quality requirements for the preparation, although color changes occurred after the cycling test without phase separation. Variations in bentonite and kaolin concentrations affected the physical characteristics of the clay mask. All formulations exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with Formulation I producing the largest inhibition zone diameter of 14.86 ± 0.36 mm, which falls into the “strong” category. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) was successfully formulated into a clay mask preparation that meets physical quality requirements and exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with Formula I identified as the optimal formulation. | 1 |
