Abstract Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) is a medicinal plant that contains various secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, steroids and terpenoids, which have the potential to function as natural antioxidants. Antioxidants play an important role in neutralizing free radicals that can cause cellular damage. This study is aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) by using the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method, determine its IC₅₀ value, and compare its antioxidant activity with that of vitamin C as a positive control. This study was conducted by using an experimental laboratory design. Dried areca nut material was extracted by the maceration method by using 96% ethanol as the extraction solvent. The resulting extract was characterized, subjected to phytochemical screening and evaluated for its antioxidant activity using the FRAP assay with a UV–Visible spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed based on the percentage of inhibition and the IC₅₀ values obtained through linear regression analysis. The phytochemical screening revealed that the ethanol extract of areca nut contained flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, steroids and terpenoids. The antioxidant activity assay using the FRAP method showed that the ethanol extract had an IC₅₀ value of 45.1298 ppm, whereas vitamin C, used as the positive control, exhibited an IC₅₀ value of 11.194 ppm. These results indicate that the ethanol extract of areca nut possesses very strong antioxidant activity, although its activity is lower than that of vitamin C. The antioxidant activity increased with increasing extract concentration, as indicated by the higher percentage of inhibition. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) exhibits very strong antioxidant activity as determined by the FRAP method and has the potential to be developed as a natural source of antioxidants.
