Abstract Restaurant wastewater contains high levels of organic matter and suspended solids, making it potentially harmful to the environment if discharged without prior treatment. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of papaya seed (Carica papaya L.) biocoagulant in reducing COD and TSS levels in restaurant wastewater in East Deli Tua in 2026. The study employed a post-test only with control group design using wastewater samples divided into four groups, a control group (without biocoagulant), and treatment groups receiving doses of 2 grams, 4 grams, and 6 grams per liter of sample. The biocoagulant was prepared by drying papaya seeds at 120°C for 2–3 hours, followed by grinding and sieving through a 100-mesh sieve. The coagulation-flocculation process was carried out using a magnetic stirrer with rapid mixing at 100–150 rpm for 2–3 minutes, followed by slow mixing at 40–60 rpm for 20–30 minutes, and then allowing the mixture to settle for 60 minutes. COD and TSS levels were measured at BTKLPP Class I Medan. The results showed that the control group's COD level was 629 mg/L and the TSS level was 309 mg/L, both exceeding the applicable quality standards. The highest COD reduction efficiency was achieved at the 4-gram dose, with a reduction of 19.08% and a final concentration of 120 mg/L. Similarly, the highest TSS reduction efficiency was also obtained at the 4-gram dose, with a reduction of 23.62% and a final concentration of 73 mg/L. At the 6-gram dose, there was a slight increase in COD to 140 mg/L and TSS to 80 mg/L, which was presumed to be influenced by overdosing, variations in wastewater characteristics, and suboptimal mixing and sedimentation processes. Papaya seed biocoagulant was effective in reducing COD and TSS levels, with an optimum dose of 4 grams per liter. However, further treatment is still required to meet the applicable wastewater quality standards. 1
