Abstract Senggani leaves (Melastoma Malabathricum L.) contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and steroids, which possess potential antioxidant properties and the ability to protect the skin from UV radiation exposure. this study was to formulate the ethanol extract of senggani leaves (Melastoma Malabathricum L.) into a sunscreen gel preparation, evaluate the physical quality of the preparation, assess its safety through irritation testing, and determine the level of panelist preference via a hedonic test. experimental method was employed, beginning with crude drug (simplicia) characterization, phytochemical screening, and extract preparation using the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. The extract was formulated into sunscreen gels at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%. Subsequently, physical quality evaluations were conducted, covering organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesiveness, spreadability, viscosity, and stability. The safety of the preparation was evaluated through an irritation test on nine panelists over a 24-hour period, while preference levels were analyzed using a hedonic test. Hedonic test data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney test. study results indicated that the ethanol extract of senggani leaves contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. All sunscreen gel formulations met physical quality standards, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesiveness, spreadability, viscosity, and stability. Irritation test results indicated that none of the formulations caused irritation, rendering them safe for use. Hedonic testing revealed differences in panelist preference levels across the formulations. Data analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test, identified the formulation containing 15% Senggani leaf ethanol extract and the positive control as the most preferred formulations.
