| Abstract | Clean water is a fundamental necessity for public health; however, dug wells—a common source of clean water—are susceptible to contamination due to substandard construction and proximity to pollution sources. This contamination can elevate coliform levels and increase the risk of diarrhea within the community. This study aimed to examine the relationship between dug well construction, the distance to pollution sources, and coliform levels regarding the incidence of diarrhea in Pringgan Hamlet, Paya Bakung Village, Hamparan Perak District. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design, involving 62 respondents selected via proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and laboratory analysis of coliform levels in well water, followed by univariate and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test. The results showed that 71.0% of the wells failed to meet standards regarding the distance to pollution sources, 64.5% had substandard construction, 77.4% exceeded permissible coliform levels, and 61.3% of respondents had experienced diarrhea. Chi-square test results indicated significant associations between the incidence of diarrhea and the distance to pollution sources (p=0.022), well construction (p=0.000), and coliform levels (p=0.000). Dug wells with substandard distances to pollution sources, poor construction, and high coliform levels were strongly linked to the high incidence of diarrhea among the residents of Pringgan Hamlet. Residents are advised to improve well construction, maintain a safe distance of at least 10 meters from pollution sources, and boil water before consumption. The Public Health Study Program is encouraged to use these findings as a reference for developing environmental health studies concerning dug well sanitation and environmentally-related diseases. | 1 |
